Chairman’s Report:

Andy Horwood opened the meeting by summarising the events of 2011, noting that events in the Solent area had again been well attended and the 8 events had been supported by 19 individual boats

 

The East Coast area, despite the efforts of Rod Minkey, has struggled to make any progress in invigorating activity back to the levels that had been enjoyed in earlier years.

 

The rally organized by John Skipper in Brixham in an attempt to attract the interest of some of the boats in the South West was disappointing in that the only boats attending had sailed from the Solent.  There were a number of possible contributing factors for this, not the least the weather.  Efforts are on going to recruit an area representative to develop activity.

 

On the racing circuit, Maxi’s are well represented in the upcoming Royal Southampton YC Double Handed series with 5 Maxi’s competing.

 

A brief outline of the recent history of the Maxi brand was presented, noting the change of ownership from Nimbus to Najad and more recently to Nordwest and Nordwest’s statement that the Maxi brand does not fit in with their product portfolio so are actively looking for a buyer.  We have contact with Nordwest, through Peter Stonestreet so we will continue to monitor the situation and advise of future developments.

Treasurer’s Statement:

 

Balance of our accounts at the end of the 2010/11 year was:

Current account: £800

Savings account: £4056

 

This represents a net income over the year of £500. In addition to the usual operating costs, the only significant investment during the year was the purchase of a new stock of burgees, website hosting costs of £150 / year and software costs of £100.

 

There is a significant balance in the Associations bank account.  Ideas were canvassed for ways this money could be used for Association development and activities.

 

Membership.

Sara provided an updated membership list for the website showing 109-boat members and 4 associate / honorary members, indicating membership levels have remained static over the past year

 

The location of boats in the UK was highlighted and noted that the biggest concentration was in the Solent region (close to 40%) which has a bearing on the success of the area’s activities

 

The burgee stock has now been replenished.

Election:

The existing committee was proposed for re-election on block, Andy Horwood, John Skipper, Rod Minkey, Peter Stonestreet, Sara Horwood, Peter Sands, and were unanimously elected

Graham Bobbit (web master) is about to start a world cruise and a replacement for his position is needed.

Thanks were given to Graham for his diligent works in maintaining the new web site over recent years and also to Andy and Sara for picking up this roll in the interim period.

Other memberships:

The following were proposed and re elected: Mick Nelmes and Hugh Rowan as Honorary Members; SD Marine as associate member; John Haskins Marine – technical advisor as associate member.

Area Coordinators:

The area coords are as set out on the website.

A rally program will be published on the web site.

Peter Sands outlined the programme for the Solent with currently 5 events planned.

It was noted, as referred to in the Chairman’s report, that the momentum for rally participation in other areas had been lost

Rod is still struggling to encourage activities on the East Coast but has agreed to set a date for a rally and advertise it to the local membership.  Date and arrangements to be confirmed

Members in other areas are widely dispersed and it was suggested that perhaps this is the reason for the lack of rally activity.

As noted elsewhere, efforts are ongoing to recruit a Co-ordinator in the South West.

Peter Stonestreet further explained the current Maxi Brand and Maxi 11 situation and is in regular contact with Nordwest.  It is understood that Nordwest are in discussions with a potential buyer for the Maxi Brand.  Updates will be posted on the website as the situation changes.

John Skipper suggested individuals might like to post their cruising plans on the web site to encourage members to meet up for impromptu rallies.  This idea was well supported and proposed that a section on the website forum could be dedicated to this activity.

Newsletter

Andy outlined in his opening statement that the news letter had not been published now for 2 years, that being due to the lack of available editorial material.

 

It was proposed and agreed that future efforts would be towards developing web based activity as this is something that can be done as articles become available, which in turn will hopefully increase website activity.

 

Helena Douglass has agreed to act as article editor / co-ordinator.

 

Rod Minkey has some material held in preparation for a news letter print run that have been requested by Andy and will be passed on to Helena for eventual publishing on the web site.

 

Web Site

There has been significant investment in both cost and effort by members in developing the Association site to where it currently stands.  Thanks were expressed to all those that have been involved.

The site is being used with 72 registered users.

We are actively seeking a web master to take over from Graham Bobbit.  Anyone willing to consider taking over this role is asked to contact the Chairman.

Web site to become main focus of information publication in place of the news letter.

As the Maxi range is no longer in production, the source of available spare parts is becoming more difficult to establish.

Julian proposed that the website could be a place for members to list the names of suppliers where parts can be obtained.  This was agreed and will be auctioned by the web master.

Peter Stonestreet recalled that Najad were negotiating with Nimbus for the Maxi spares they held and will enquire from his contacts how far that progressed and where those parts are currently held.

It was proposed that a meeting could be arranged at the London Boat Show, possibly on the last Sunday, as a focal point allowing members from around the Country the opportunity to meet-up.  This will be investigated further.

No other items were tabled and the meeting was closed at 13.30 hrs.

There is still a vacancy again for webmaster so any volunteers to assist in this area would be gratefully received. This is not an onerous task – just dealing with the emails triggered from the website (1-2 per week) and possibly helping upload articles (although we may have another volunteer to help with this).

 

All other committee members are willing to continue in post.

 

Events

 

We are conscious that currently most events are Solent /South Coast.

Are members in other areas interested in attending events maybe pub meetings, rallies, Boat Show? If so any suggestions would be very useful so they could be discussed at the AGM.

Chairman’s Report:

2010 was a mixed year for the Maxi Owners’ Association. Once again, we had a highly successful Rally program based in and around the Solent, with rather more luck with the weather this year than we have become accustomed to over the last couple of years. And we have also revolutionised our presence on the Internet, with a much more modern and easily navigated new web site at www.maxiowners.org. This provides individual registration and a discussion forum, which many members had requested, and I am pleased to see is getting a steady sprinkling of questions and answers. This new web site, and the content management system which it sits on, has been a multi-year project for Chris Wildey, ably assisted by Graham Bobbit, so huge thanks to them (and to Helen and Wendy for letting them spend endless hours online sorting it all out.

 

We also had a number of racing successes during the year, especially in the (very friendly) RSYC Double Handed Series, where Andy and Sara Horwood (Asante, 1100), Bob and Jan Trimble (now Arcona owners, but ex- Maxi 1150) and I all took prizes, and I won the overall series for Class 3. I can thoroughly recommend this series for anyone interested in a gentle introduction to racing their Maxi.

 

However, there have been some more disappointing aspects to the year.

Despite continued efforts, we have not been able to reestablish our East Coast rally program, or to get rallies or meetings going elsewhere. I would therefore ask that anyone who might be interested in meeting up with other local Maxis, even if just for a cuppa or a pint, pick a venue and a time and let Peter Stonestreet know, and we will publish the date and contact owners in your area to encourage them to attend. It would be great if we could get one or two events in other areas of the country where we have members, especially the Clyde and the South West. (I am setting a good example, by organising a lunchtime meet in Brixham on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday weekend). We also did not manage to get our newsletter out, and would really appreciate more support with this (especially on the editorial front). If you can help, please let me or Andy Horwood know – although it is quite a bit of work, it is quite fun and very rewarding, especially as Rod  Minkey does such a great job of layout and printing to produce a really professional looking product.

 

Finally, on a personal note, those of you on the South Coast will have observed that I am recently managing to attend less events and sprouting steadily more grey hairs – my work is demanding a lot of time at the moment and I have not been able to give the Association the commitment it deserves. I therefore decided to stand down as Chairman at this AGM, after 4 years, and I am delighted that Andy Horwood agreed to stand and was elected to replace me. I will be staying on the committee as Treasurer and hope to still make some events this year.

Stocks of burgees are very low and it was agreed to purchase new stocks

With the Chairman standing down (see above Chairman’s report), Andy Horwood was proposed and unanimously elected to take this position

After many years on the committee and credited with establishing the new web site, Chris Wildey stands down as Web Master from the Committee and has accepted the position of “Web Site Technical Advisor”.  He will continue to offer support to the new web master

The other existing committee offered for re-election on block, John Skipper, Rod Minkey, Peter Stonestreet, Sara Horwood, Peter Sands, Graham Bobbitt and were unanimously elected

Other memberships:

Graham Bobbitt is currently acting as Web Master and has given notice that he plans to embark on an extended cruise which will preclude him from performing his duties in this role.

Currently Grahams time schedule is undefined, but a new member must be recruited on to the Committee to take over this role to allow a maximum hand over period

It was agreed that a request would be placed on the website for a member, ideally with some Joomla experience, to join the Committee and undertake this role.

 

Area Coordinators:

Newsletter

Chairman’s report highlighted the problems with the news letter.

 

One of the main problems is finding sufficient quantity of editorial material, to which all members are encouraged to participate in providing articles (cruising experiences, racing experiences or technical) and photographs for the publication.

 

From conversations that had taken place with Helena Douglas is was thought that she may consider taking up a roll in the newsletter team providing clear guidelines as to responsibility were established

There will be two primary roles             a) Publisher (Rod Minkey)

b) Editor (Helena Douglas)

 

Andy will discuss with Helena and Rod to establish a way ahead

Advertising space is available and a more pro active effort should be made to contact possible contributors.

Peter Sands will contact Nautical Nellies, Mike Jennings (Najad) and GP Sails

Peter Stonestreet will compile, with input from Maxi, a Maxi 11 article

 

Web Site

As he steps down from position of Web Master, the Committee extends thanks on behalf of all the Membership to Chris for his work in developing and establishing the new web site.

The site is being well used with 72 registered users.

With the imminent departure of Graham, a request is sent to the Membership for someone to join the Committee to fill the vacant Web Master’s position.

David Gibbs (Spurwing) had indicated an interest in getting involved last year and should be contacted.

It was suggested that a boat show based meeting could be arranged for London, using the Najad / Maxi stand as the location and the new Maxi 11 as the focus.

The level of attendance at the AGM was very low.  The association is run by its members, for members.  If the Association is to thrive it will rely on more active participation from the members.

Our 2009 AGM was once again held at the Queen Inn at Dummer, and we were pleased to see a good turnout.  We were very pleased to have four new volunteers to step forward to help with Membership, Secretarial and Newsletter Editor duties.

Solent area have once again organised a comprehensive Rally Programme, which might possibly be extended to include a cruise to the Channel Isles.  Another printed newsletter is in preparation, so don’t forget we are already looking for new articles and adverts for the next one!  Further details of the AGM (and a full report in due course) can be found in the Members Area.
